Weather & When to Go

Tourism & Recreation
  Mexico vacations unfold in a mosaic of colonial towns, little visited ancient ruins, alpine forests, and lush semi-tropical valleys. Mexico City is not easily conquered. You might start with a half-day or full-day city tour, easily arranged upon arrival. Another option is to tackle the city in sectors, devoting a day or two to each area of the city. Within Mexico City there are basically three geographic areas of interest:
  • Historic Center: a compact 60-block sector replete with Aztec and Spanish colonial influence; includes the Zocalo, Avenida Madero / Juarez, the Alameda Central Part, several fine museums and important historic sites. The entire zone was declared a national historic monument in 1980. The U.N. recognized the area in 1987 as a “World Heritage” site.


  • Paseo de La Reforma/Chapultepec Park: spans several kilometers along the city’s grand east-west, French-inspired avenue; an area with strong European influence; outstanding museums (including the Anthropological Museum, children’s Paplote Museum and Chapultepec Castle) and the stylish Zona Rosa and Polanco areas.


  • Southern Mexico City: the southern sector includes the National University, ruins of Cuicuilco, the floating gardens of Xochimilco, the colonial neighborhoods of Coyocan and San angel, and several excellent museums.
Adventures & Ecotourism
  With rural areas representing more than half of Mexico City’s landmass, and natural regions encircling the capital, attractions include mountains, forest, volcanoes and a rich assortment of flora and fauna. Activities run the gamut from hiking and mountain biking to rock climbing and spelunking.
